Coaching Tips

Proven Training Tips
  • Have a session plan, set up early and start on time.
  • Coach skills not drills (you don’t see drills happen in a game).
  • Relate everything at training to a ‘game like situation‘. For example, use small sided games for a large portion of each session. This has the added bonus of increasing fitness levels without having to do conditioning separately.
  • Let each player have 500+ touches per session (use SSGs, not “stand in line” drills or long scrimmages).
  • Let every player have a ball at their feet for a large percentage of session.
  • Coach efficiently, no gaps, have quick transitions, keep the session moving.
  • Use lots of cones, take away cones to reveal area for next exercise, minimizing time between exercises.
  • Coach only one topic per session (use various exercises to teach the one skill).
  • Coach to player’s age and ability (see FFA curriculum), build on current skills and let players have success.
  • Don’t do the ‘same old same old’. Learn new coaching techniques and ‘mix it up’ to make training fun.
  • Don’t over coach (allow players to make own decisions and learn from own mistakes).
  • Stimulate rather than instruct (youth players learn better by doing rather than listening).
  • Inspire confidence through encouragement, not anxiety through demands.
  • Use a reward system to motivate (e.g. patches, special activity, weekly award or points).
  • If something isn’t working, change it!
