History of the Alstonville & District Football Club

Club History

Alstonville Soccer Club was formed in 1987 from the amalgamation of the Alstonville Junior Soccer Club (formed in 1972) and Alstonvilla Senior Soccer Club (formed in 1980).

The Alstonville Junior Soccer Club fielded its first team in 1972, with an Under 8's team yet their ages ranged from 4 to 8 years. So they played in this division for some years before progressing to the Under 9's group. This team trained at Geoff Watt oval.

The Alstonville Senior Soccer Club was formed in 1980.

The Senior and Junior Soccer Clubs operated separately until 1987 when amalgamation occurred, to form the Alstonville Soccer Club. The meeting was held at the Bowling Club on 17th November 1987. After much dialogue, the Alstonville Soccer Club was born.

In 2006 the name of the club was formerly changed to the Alstonville & District Football Club.

Growth: (the club continues to grow)

1983 - 15 junior teams
1994 - 27 junior teams + 4 senior teams
2003 - 43 junior teams + 6 senior teams
2010 - 46 junior teams + 7 senior teams
2011 - 49 junior teams + 8 senior teams (615 players)

Playing Fields

Games were first played at Geoff Watt oval but as the club grew in the early 80's some training and games took place at Alstonville Primary School, the Showground, the current TAFE site at Wollongbar, an area east of the current Telstra building in Alstonville and at Crawford Park.

Grounds were shared with the Hockey and Rugby League clubs and increased numbers within all clubs placed preasure on local sporting grounds. The club then asked Ballina Shire Council to make ground allocations for soccer. Currently the club plays on fields located at Geoff Watt oval and Crawford Park. The rugby league club is no longer running in Alstonville and hockey is played at Gap Road fields.

Uniform Colours

The original playing strip was red and white but later changed to "red with black stripe". At one stage, it was red with black sleeves and trim when fabric became unavailable. In 1994, the decision was made to change back to the popular red with black strip for all age divisions.

Annual August Carnival

In 1975, Alstonville Soccer Club organised the district's first soccer carnival. Two carnivals (odd and even ages) were held each season until 1989 when all ages played on the same day. This event still continues, on the first Sunday in August - being a great fundraiser and a great day for families to watch games between approx. 100 soccer teams.

Newsletter

In 1988 the first Issue of "The SWEEPER" magazine was produced to inform the Alstonville soccer community of the fortnightly events within the club and competitions.

Currently we publish a Newsletter (still called the sweeper) that continues to keep the local soccer players, families and patrons informed about the success and organisation of our wonderful club.

It also shows the support for the club from the many generous sponsors.
