Grade 12

Villa Magic Grand Final Champions

The grade 12's second division (north) are the joint winners of the Grand Final held at Shores ground against Bangalow.

The score at full time was 1-1 so extra time was played.  After a further 20 minutes extra time the score was still 1-1 and Alstonville and Bangalow were declared joint winners.

Well done Magic on a great season. Pictured below is proud coach Todd Westgate and his son Brock.

Gr12 Wizards Through to GRAND FINAL!

On Saturday morning the Gr12 1st Wizards played a semi final match against rivals Byron Bay. On their previous two meetings this year Byron won 5-0. It started raining during the match producing wet conditions under foot.

At full time it was a respectable 0-0 score line. However early into extra time Liam Corney produced what would become the winning goal with the Wizards upsetting Byron 1-0 in the end.

This fantastic win puts the Wizards straight into the Grand Final at Oakes Oval on 10 Sept at 9:45AM. We need as many supporters as possible to go along and cheer for our team so mark this in your diary. Well done Wizards and good luck for the GF.

Two Wins & a Draw for the Thunderbolts

After an extended break from competition due to holidays, wet weather and an opposition forfeit, the U12 Thunderbolts have returned with a new found hunger for victory.

Last week (24/7) they were up against current 3rd place holders Shores Crocs. Magnificent play from Kye in goals ably supported by the fullbacks Adam, Blake, Ollie and Isaac kept the Crocs scoreless, while great work in the mid field set up a great goal for Aiden to put away. An unstoppable penalty shot from outside the box by Kurt produced a final score of 2-0.

Yesterday’s game against Eureka was a fast paced affair with the game continually moving from one end of the field to the other. Eureka made an early break against the play to take an on goal lead. The Thunderbolts responded quickly with the forward line mounting a strong offensive leveling the score. This was followed up before half time with a second goal, this time scored by Laurie up front.

Again, a feature of the game was great keeping by Kye and a strong defence from the backs, but the real strength was a fast and accurate mid field. All of the mid fielders, Ethan, Ollie, Kurt, Hayden, Sam and Laurie were hungry for the ball and continually kept the attack well into Eureka’s half. After the break, Eureka responded with a good goal leaving a 2 all score for much of the half until a booming shot by Kurt from outside the penalty box gave Alstonville a 3-2 victory.

A catch-up game against Lismore Thistles was scheduled for Sunday at Crawford Park 1 and this was expected to be a hard match as Thistles are currently in second place. Due to injuries and other absences, the Thunderbolts only fielded 10 players for the warm sunny day. Again it was a fast match with the teams continually moving from half to half. Both team’s defences held until an accidental handball by Alstonville in the box gave a direct shot to the Thistles which they put away. The 1-0 score held until half time.

In the second half, the Thunderbolts put in an even stronger performance with fantastic pass forward from Isaac in the backs up to Hayden in the centres being pushed down the field for Kurt to put away.

Strong play by the Thunderbolts kept the ball in the Thistles half for much of the remainder of the match, but despite continual attacks, the Thistles defence held, resulting in a 1-1 draw. All of the Thunderbolts players worked hard with the great passing between the players being a particular highlight. Laurie and Ben in the forwards were continually on the attack and the Thunderbolts defence never allowed the Thistles to mount much of an attack.

The Thunderbolts are coached by Debbie Barrat and managed by Tracie Pelley.

Thunderbolts First Game!

The U12 Thunderbolts finally managed to make it on to the pitch today (7/5) after all of the rain of the past month.

With limited preparation due to the rain, the team started with a quick goal against the Nimbin Headers and then held them scoreless for the first half.

The positional play was excellent with good passing between all players. Football newcomers Antonio and Sam played well in the midfield and backs and Lawrie’s return after a long absence was commendable. The second half was a slightly less enthusiastic affair as the warm sunny day and a lack of subs started to take its toll, but the team continued to attack and defend well.

Good play by Nimbin and a bit of luck enabled them to scare 2 goals in the second half and despite a late booming shot by Kurt which hit the far post; the Thunderbolts couldn’t make up the difference. A 1-2 loss in the first round against a traditionally strong opponent was a great result and augers well for the season.

This picture illustarates that although it was a 2-1 victory to Nimbin the Thunderbolts came off the feild all smiles.

This great attitude win, lose or draw can be credited to coach Deb Barrett and the supportive team of parents. Go Thunderbolts!!

Gr12 Thunderbolts win against Lennox

The Gr12 Thunderbolts had a double header this weekend (14-15/5) with a match against Lennox Head on Saturday and a catch-up match against Lismore Thistles on Sunday morning. On Saturday Lennox Head started off with a quick goal which helped to inspire the Thunderbolts to put more energy into the game. A response came midway through the first half and a second goal, with a classic run down the right wing with a perfect cross allowing Kurt to drive the ball past the Lennox Head goal keeper putting the Thunderbolts in the lead at half time. The second half was more of the same with Lennox playing an attacking game, challenging the solid back line of Adam, Blake and Antonio and the goal keeper Kye. The return of Blake’s strong kicking helped to strengthen the defence, resisting a number of strong attacks. The Thunderbolts scored another 2 goals to Lennox’s one in the half provide a 4-2 margin until a late goal on the final whistle by Lennox brought the final score to 4-3.

The Sunday match against the Lismore Thistles started much the same as the Saturday game with the Thistles scoring an early goal. Again an attacking game by the opposition challenged the defence and a couple of lucky shots by the Thistles provided a 3 goal deficit at half time. Isaac’s moving into the midfield for the second half helped lift the Thunderbolt’s enthusiasm and strengthened the hardworking midfielders Ethan, Hayden and Ollie. The second half was fast moving from one end of the field to the other, but the Thunderbolts played the stronger game, with many excellent chances only resisted by the solid Thistles defence. The Thunderbolts scored 2 great goals (one to Aiden and one to Kurt) in the half to give a final score of 3-2 to the Thistles. The return match against the Thistles next weekend should be a great game.
